Gallery Weekend Berlin 2016 | KwieKulik

For this year’s Gallery Weekend Berlin 2016, ŻAK | BRANICKA is pleased to announce the exhibition The Monument Without a Passport by KwieKulik (Zofia Kulik, Przemysław Kwiek). The gallery will show photo series as well as videos which mostly focus on criticism of state oppression. The main topic is Freedom: both personal and social, but also freedom to travel and of thought. The works to be presented, were made in the 1970s, and they are as timeless as they are actual, proving just exactly how easily history repeats itself.

Furthermore, ŻAK | BRANICKA will host a daily screening of the documentary "KWIEKULIK”, directed by A. Zakrzewska and J. Turowicz as well as some videos of KwieKulik at the nearby cinema fsk (Segitzdamm 2, 10969 Berlin).
Screenings will run between 27 – 30 April, 2016 everyday at 4pm.

On Friday 29 April, 2016 at 5pm the book "KWIEKULIK” published by the Museum of Modern At Warsaw and edited by Łukasz Ronduda and Georg Schöllhammer will be presented at the gallery.

Exhibition: 28 April – 30 July, 2016
Opening: Friday, 29 April 2016, 6 – 9pm. Zofia Kulik will be present.

The exhibition The Body of Words, consisting of three new film installations by the artist, employs itself with the influence language has on human perception and the limits it sets. In her films and collages of recent years, Polska has often addressed the issues of responsibility and social influence of the artist and furthermore she was examining various stances of the processes of legitimization or exclusion: in the field of art history, history, language and consciousness.

Exhibition: May 1 - June 20, 2015

ŻAK | BRANICKA - ARCO 2015

We are proud to present our participation at ARCOmadrid 2015 with works of two Berlin based artists who belong to two different generations of conceptual art: Natalia Stachon born in 1977 and Ryszard Wasko born in 1947.
The exhibited works are rooted in "cut-up” technique developed by William S. Burroughs’s in the 50s. Various textual sources are cut up (or folded) into small fragments and then newly arranged or interlaced. Natalia Stachon and Ryszard Wasko applied this technique from literature, each of them in a different way, into visual art.

For this year’s Gallery Weekend Berlin 2014 ŻAK | BRANICKA is delighted to present an exhibition by Zofia Kulik, entitled Instead of Sculpture – Sequences 1968-71.

This exhibition is a double "return" for the artist: a return to her solo work after several years spent working on the archive and publishing a monumental monograph dedicated to the artistic duo KwieKulik1, and also a return to her graduation work created in 1970/71 at the Sculpture Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. This project has not seen the light of day for over four and a half decades, and was never finally edited. Selected fragments from this work will be presented for the first time as a photo sequences at ŻAK | BRANICKA.

Stanisław Dróżdż and Marlena Kudlicka at ARCO 2014

Marlena Kudlicka, Protocol of errors on.e (02), 2014, collage, 42 x 30 cm

Protocol of errors on.e
project constitutes a protocol structure, collecting and categorising the different meanings of error found in language, statistics, and logic. Marlena Kudlicka is interested in the term and the function that the protocol itself carries, as well as its references as a code of proper conduct. The collected register, which evokes a notion of error, is the starting point for a project that contains sculptures, collages, and drawings. The artist wonders where errors originate. She is interested in the technological mechanisms (machines) and mental mechanisms behind language errors. The artist includes printing machines in these technological mechanisms - old linotypes, in which printing errors often occurred. Another source of inspiration for Kudlicka is the Constructivist prints of such artists as Władysław Strzemiński, Henryk Berlewi, Jan Tschichold, and El Lissitzky.

Protocol of errors on.e series was specially made for the Arco Fair in Madrid, where Kudlicka’s work was shown alongside one of the classics of Polish concrete poetry, Stanisław Dróżdż. Kudlicka’ssculptures entered a dialogue with Dróżdż’s Forgetting of 1967.

What links them is, above all, an analysis of language. The meeting of these two artists: the late Dróżdż, whose most important pieces were created in the 1960s and 1970s, and the young sculptress, who draws from the avant-garde of the 20th century, was a meeting of opposites: Dróżdż sought precision and faultless solutions, while Kudlicka is inspired by errors. We might also say that Kudlicka’s work literally begins where Dróżdż’s leaves off—at the period. The period is the main component of Kudlicka’s sculptures. The period appears as a glass circle that we might associate, for instance, with a magnifying glass for finding errors (there is such a popular function in mobile phones, for instance). The period is also a key symbol in the on.e collage series, which came about through an accidental error in writing the word "one”. Here the period is an error, a place where a short circuit transpires, stopping or interrupting a process.

Paweł Ksi?rnżek’s project Silent Utopia is a speculative fantasy regarding the infiltrations and connections between Eastern European modernism in architecture and German silent film of the 1920’s. The Art Basel Statements presentation focuses on Metropolis, the 1925 film by director and architect, Fritz Lang, and the implementations of such prominent architects of the period.
Paweł Ksi?rnżek examines the connections between this architecture and the film and based on these connections, he proposes a hypothetical analogy for the existence of a sensibility common to that era of creators and thinkers. Upon examining both aesthetics, he wonders whether there were visual markers that could have been prognostic of the impending catastrophe.  Ksi?rnżek speculates about how a film could look, and how its content would be altered or maintained, when Czech, Hungarian or Polish architecture replaces the scenography. What would it look like if the film was made in Prague with the Bata Shop building in the background (Ludvik Kysela, Bata Store, Prague 1929), or in Brno in front of Josef Kranz’s 1929 Café Era, using the building’s neon E-R-A sign to light the street on a Metropolis night? In fact, why wasn’t the film shot on Warsaw’s "Ulica Przyszlosci” ("Future Street”) designed by Lech Niemojewski in 1925?
Paweł Ksi?rnżek’s paintings and photomontages function as his tools in effacing the border between document and fiction. By juxtaposing and overlaying these two historical phenomena, connected by a trust in the future and contemporaneously created in different places in Europe, Pawel Ksi?rnżek has built his own fake vision of the past.

Concept

The true fiction / the fictional truth

The exhibition presented at the ŻAK | BRANICKA stand focuses on one side, on how deeply we believe in the fulfillment of those promises of a future that will always remain utopic and on the other hand, on how much we doubt the probability of phenomena, that most likely are real.
We had belived in a future so much, but it proved to be a catastrophy even before it was fully manifested. Everything that Modernism had promised us has remained unfulfilled, and the dream of the splendit future has turned out to be fiction. The topic of the utopia of Modernism is taken up in the work of Szymon Kobylarz in the model of a building that has been built after the L´Unite d´habitation de Marseille of Le Corbusier. This building stands today in the industrial city of Katowice (Poland), while the original no longer exists. In the work, Superjednostka the artist has sentenced the building to destruction.
To the past refers also Krzysztof Zielinski, who has photographed his primary school built in the 60´s. In his works the harshness of the socialistic epoch becomes cozy. Even deeper into the past reaches Pawel Ksiazek as he refers to the exclusive aesthetic of De Stjil, and exposes its affiliations with the visual culture of the Black Metal. These works deal with the way the blending of high culture into mass culture proceeds.
The project of Hubert Czerepok is a classic reenactment of events that took place in the 70´s, in a small village in Poland. Even if we believe in conspiracy theories, we don´t want to believe in the landing of an UFO, even if it could be true.
